Keeping the record straight

For those who received the letter from 'Beverage Bitch' and may be a bit confused, we are NOT one and the same, nor am I Beverage Babe II. Though I do believe in free speech as you have seen, I do not condone the idea of threats or talk of boycotts and retaliation. My intent was only to pass on information to the faire community the awful things happening in hopes that we would come together as community and our voices heard.

I have expressed the anger, frustration and disgust that most of the faire community is feeling at this time, albeit too aggressively at times. The only arguments to my letters that I have received have been from the new people in beverage. I have received a stunning amount of support, with the exception of one letter asking that I not be so harsh and reflect on some of the positive. Thank you again for the attitude check.

I have done the attitude check and now it's time for everyone to do a reality check. Look around you, are you and your fellow faire family as happy to be there as you were in previous years? Are the things you see going on making you feel as though the faire is falling away from what it is supposed to be about?

It's true I don't care for the Selways or what they represent. It's not who or what they are but more importantly what the Selways are not, they are not faire folk. Just because you work at faire or own a booth at faire does not automatically make you faire folk. Being faire folk comes from within, your heart and sole, it's a way of being, and from that comes a community, a family. It is that love that keeps this faire going and it's that same love that we have in us that keep the people coming back to see us each year.

There is no anger in this letter, it's just time for people to start thinking about what they've heard and seen and decide if they are going to speak up or just let the faire, as it's been for 46 years, go by the way side.

We are the true spirit of the faire
I did much, much, better then I figured I would. It was a nice day for a ride, it was cool and overcast. This helped me greatly, since I don’t do well in the heat. Out of all of us riding in the 50 miler, I finished very high. I am not one for patting myself on the back. But, after 16 years of not riding and to do this well was a shock to me. I was just hoping to finish. But, it all came back to me and it was like I never left. Thanks again.

From: "Beverage Babe"
Subject: Re: Spirit of Faire

Please feel free to pass this on to those with a vested interest in this Faire.

Recently, Beverage Babe sent out an email to various parties regarding some issues that are happening currently with the new Director of the Beverage Department. While I agree with the points that Beverage Babe made, I think that it might have gotten a little personal (I understand it getting personal because of the way that people were treated).

I think the bigger issues are the changes and how they are being implemented. Though many of us have been accused in the past of being stuck in our ways, the Beverage Department has taken change in better stride that any other area of Faire. We pushed on through the changes moving from Agoura to Upper Devore to Lower Devore to Irwindale. We have dealt with ownership changes, Corporate Management changes, stand changes and many other changes and while we would worry briefly about the changes, we have been lucky to have Beverage Directors who worked with the Ale Stand Managers to explain, maneuver and make everyone feel these changes would work. Even though some failed, a strong leader will help you through change, not damage moral in the change. This is not the new leadership that we have seen.

One change which has been implemented by Kirsten is bringing in a large number of new crew members to supplant crew members who have worked faire for years. Why would experienced professionals be replaced by people who have never worked our floors? It has been said that many of the new crew have never worked in an Ale Stand, instead they have been in the front of a food booth, or back kitchen. While I do not disagree that this is hard work, it is not Beverage experience. Beverage has the highest customer expectation of any department outside of Entertainment. I have also worked at a food booth, as have others who are from the Beverage Department, we all know that heavy use of BFA is discouraged at food booths, acting with customers is limited and customers expect little besides getting their food from such a booth. But in the 46 years of the Southern California Faire customers have been entertained and amused while paying rather high prices for beverages. More times than I can count I have heard of customers going out of their way to a stand that they thought offered the best service. Does this acting come at a price to customer service and speed? Never! That is one of the first things a Beverage employee learns, how to entertain the crowds in a way that never slows the pace.

I understand it is important to save money and make the Beverage Department more profitable. Many of the changes that have been made were made under the auspices of "saving money". The problem is that none of these changes actually save money. Swapping out experienced crew with inexperienced crew does not save money (if fact it is more expensive since HR will be required to pay $7 on each of these new hires). The person making all of these changes, Kirsten, was hired with a full salary – replacing somebody who was performing the same task, as part of their other duties, for a mere pittance. The decision was also made to use poorly made logo cups, instead of the inexpensive cups which are available from the vendors (such as Pepsi and Budweiser). Another confounding change is the removal of all the Cashiers from the Ale Stands.

Cashiers have an important role, these people were never there as time savers or for anyone's ease they were there for the protection of the Faire's money. Physically they have protected the monies as well as offering accountability and a method of making sure that transactions were correctly handled. Removing these employees will in no way save the Faire any money. In fact, the servers must now share cash boxes with each other and must go in and out of the cashbox several hundred times a day. While I do not doubt the honesty of people, mistakes can be made – everybody is human. Cashiers, in the past, were the frontline against those mistakes. Kristen acknowledged that mistakes may be made but that a small amount of loss was "acceptable." To be honest, I was floored when I heard a new Director actually say that loss was acceptable; in all the years I have worked I have never heard that said.

Experienced crew members and Cashiers also offered another protection of watching the crowds. Almost every Cashier has at some point caught something that would have otherwise been impossible for a server to see. Many times these activities were illegal and if they had not been caught could have brought trouble to the Faire. Irwindale, as well as the County Parks, have been watching this Faire to make sure that we follow the rules. How does removing experienced and trained employees from their positions for those with minimal training make sure that they do not break the law? The Police and Sheriffs do not turn a blind eye to "mistakes" or "inexperience" when it comes to serving alcohol to minors, those who are intoxicated or drunk driving. Many of those who were replaced had State training in the laws and expectations of handling alcohol within the State, do the new employees? How are they going to handle the situation if they do mishandle a situation that leads them to being fined or even the Faire losing its alcohol license? This is the type of thing that makes experienced professionals so important to this department. We might make it look like fun and games but there is a seriousness behind the job that many will never see from the front.

I am not bitter about the situation I am saddened by it. I worry about the effects this will take on department as well as the Faire. I do have a job, I am willing to work with the changes but if I see them causing the inner destruction of the Faire I will not sit around and be quiet. I know that the changes will continue unabated no matter what I say but as I learned from the movements in the 60's "If you stand for nothing you will fall for anything" I stand for this Faire and the unique experience and family that it has created for myself, my friends and most importantly the customers who make all of it happen. If the changes work so be it, but if not I think it is going to be a hard schism to mend not only between the Faire and past employees but also the customers we will let down. This department has been there for the Faire for so long it is so sad to see the Faire not there for us when we need them.

I dream of a Phoenix rising from these ashes,

The past two weekends have been very interesting to say the least. One hell hot weekend that had the patrons going from one shady spot to another trying to stay cool and beautiful weather this weekend with just a touch of wind hither and yon. Doesn't our new front gate look phenomenal, great work guys and gals! I would like to give a hardy HUZZAH! to the newest stand manager and her crew at The End of the World for a job well done the Saturday of second weekend. They were rewarded by our esteemed General Manager with a delectable platter of yummies from the Black Hart for being the stand that came closest to balancing. Way to go! Keep up the good work and keep having fun!

We should all be given three hardy HUZZAHS! We have continued to do what we do best and do it well given the circumstances, however, its not working as well as it once did.

We all know these well-known phrases; Oh what tangled webs we weave when first we practice to deceive. You reap what you sew. What goes around, comes around. We reserve the right to refuse service to anyone. But it all comes down to, isn't KARMA a wonderful thing.

I don't know about anyone else, but I highly resent being considered nothing more than money generating 'Cattle'. Attempts are being made to control where we are allowed to partake in our Saturday morning meals. Herded towards the cattle troff so to speak, the coin operated troff. Years of guild family tradition are being destroyed out of sheer greed. Do I really have to say her name? I didn't think so. She thinks that by stopping anyone beside herself from providing food to his or her guild or crew that they will automatically go to her. Eh! Wrong! I for one will not be told where I may or may not eat and would just as soon share a troff with one of the beauties in the equine guild then to ever patronize any of her establishments no matter the time of day. Anyone for road apples?

But seriously, unlike Devore there are many eating establishments VERY close to site for your Saturday morning repast. Granted this is not the same as a home cooked family meal or as convenient but anything at this point is better than being made to think you have no choice but to conform to her will. Anyone having a BBQ, sandwich fixings or any kind of food for that matter that is meant to be shared with friends and family be warned, you're being watched and if you're not careful she may make a phone call to the authorities to report you as well.

As a parent this next subject disturbs me greatly and should be taken as a warning for anyone with teenage girls looking to work for her or are working for her, get them out now lest they be made into whores. Our children are being taken advantage of. Young teen girls are being told to pull their sleeves down off their shoulders, tighten their bodice for better cleavage, lean on the counters and beg for tips to line her own greedy pockets. These girls are at a tender age, some already have self esteem issues and she's teaching them that using their bodies and looks will bring not only attention but money as well. Tell me that is not the job of a pimp. Selling her greasy carnival food and begging for tips seems to yield less than $20 a weekend in tips for her counter girls after she counted and divided the tips from all of her booths. We have all seen those tip baskets on the counters at one time or another and they are always filled with bills and these girls are getting less than $20 for a weekend of work? It didn't occur to me till now why the loss of one of her 'Best' counter girls was so hard on her. She told me this girl would bring in $250 a day in tips, but what she didn't tell me was the girl only saw about 10% of it and she obviously took the rest. Does she not know that there are laws regarding tip pooling and that there are strict guidelines as to who can and cannot take part in the pooling? Anyone that has the ability of hiring or firing employees is NOT entitled to any portion of the tips! And the tips cannot be used to pay their wages unless they were told up front that they were working for tips only. Heaven forbid you tell her you want to quit less you receive a viperous verbal attack and threats of having your pass pulled and told you will never work anywhere in faire again.

Can anyone send me the montra that Venta used to end our morning meetings? I don't recall it in its entirety but I do know that it ended on a loud positive note that let everyone on site know why we were there. "We love our faire!" Unlike the end of her montra that I heard about last year that ended with, "Why are we here?" "To make YOU money!"

Correct me if I'm wrong but up until this season she could always be found hovering around her many food booths, like a buzzard circling a rotting carcass. This season she seems to be out and about examining all the vendor booths and the products there in. Is she now preparing to snake her way into taking over marketplace as well? Or will faire have yet another new owner added to the list next year?

The situation seems to now be going far beyond the boundaries of just the beverage department and encompasses the entire faire. Do we really want Barney the Giant Purple People Pooping Dragon back joined by roller coasters and ferris wheels?

Because this seems to be becoming so wide spread, I ask that anyone who knows someone in a guild, entertainment, booth owner, FOF or anyone else that has a vested interest in our faire be it emotional or monetary, please share this with them.

And to those that will scoff at this and state as they have before, 'I have a life outside faire, this is a business', all I can say is, leave and leave now. You don't get it, you never will get it and you just don't belong. I'll put it terms you may better understand, if you can't envelop the spirit, meaning and the way of the faire into your heart then maybe this isn't the place for you, go join a carnival.

We are the true spirit of the faire.

P.S. Kirsten, we appreciate you trying to step into our shoes but quite honestly you need to pick up the pace people are waiting.

=============
http://www.mercurynews.com/ci_8888028?source=rss

SACRAMENTO - Joe Six-pack will have to pay a lot more to get his buzz on if Assemblyman Jim Beall has his way.

The San Jose Democrat on Thursday proposed raising the beer tax by $1.80 per six-pack, or 30 cents per can or bottle. The current tax is 2 cents per can. That's an increase of about 1,500 percent.

Beall said the tax would generate $2 billion a year to fund health care services, crime prevention and programs to prevent underage drinking and addiction.

"The people who use alcohol should pay for part of the cost to society, just like we've accepted that concept with tobacco," Beall said.

He added that the beer tax hasn't been touched since 1991, and the increase then was meager.

But the freshman lawmaker will have to lift the legislative equivalent of a full keg of beer over his head to get his tax enacted. That's because it would require a two-thirds vote in the Assembly and Senate - and then, because it's a constitutional amendment, it would have to be approved by voters. Republicans say it's a non-starter.

"I predict the shelf life will be very short," said Assemblyman Roger Niello, R-Sacramento, vice chairman of the budget committee. "It's a piecemeal approach to the budget that completely avoids any discussion of spending discipline, which is fundamentally why we have the problem that we have."

Mike Fox Sr., chairman of San Jose-based beer distributor M.E. Fox & Co., said Beall's heart is in the right
Advertisement
place. "He's very dedicated in areas of health," Fox said. "But a tax of that nature is far too grievous. The beer industry produces so much for the economy. He won't get to first base with that."

Dan Gordon, co-founder of Gordon Biersch Brewing Co., calculated that the tax on a barrel of beer would go from $6.40 to $89. "We would all be looking for jobs," he said.

Beall said he's targeting beer because his research showed that California undertaxes brew relative to other states, which he said isn't the case with wine and spirits. But it's also true that taking on the beer lobby will be hard enough for Beall, without letting it team up with the wine and spirits industries.

Beall, a former Santa Clara County supervisor, has focused heavily on underage drinking during his time in Sacramento. He is pushing legislation that would require the sweet alcoholic malt beverages known as "alco-pops" to include warning labels clearly stating that they contain alcohol.

And last year, Beall lobbied successfully to persuade the state Franchise Tax Board to tax "alco-pops" at the rate assessed to hard liquor products instead of beer - a move that was expected to raise the price of a six pack by about $2. The increase is scheduled to go into effect later this year.

That effort, however, did not require a two-thirds vote in the Legislature.
1 oz Triple Sec
1 oz Orange Juice
- Shake ingredients and pour over ice in a Rocks glass
Fill with Lemon Lime Soda

Those of us that have imbibed together know that I think a formal toast is . . . well . . . too formal, so to all of you fabulous Ale people out there instead of "raise your glass" I say "up yours !!"
.
.
Strawberry Daiquiri

This Strawberry Daiquiri has no historical or regional authenticity; it is just the recipe that everyone seems to like. But unlike my other recipes this one has no measured quantities.

Equipment & Ingredients:
- Yes, you do need a blender
- Frozen Strawberries (whole or half berries – NOT the kind in syrup)
- White Rum (Bacardi or better)
- Strawberry drink (Kern’s Nectar Strawberry Fresa works)
- Limes
- Extra wide slushy/boba straws (Smart & Final usually has them)

How much of anything that you need of course depends on how many people you will be serving. If you are making Strawberry Daiquiris for a small group then definitely grab the 3 lb bag of frozen berries, 4 to 5 cans (12 oz) Strawberry drink, a half dozen limes, and a 1.75 liter bottle of Rum.

Instruction:
- Fill blender about ¾ with frozen Strawberries
- Pour in Rum about ½ to ¾ the height if Strawberries
- Add Strawberry drink to top level of frozen berries
- Squeeze in ½ lime
- Blend until smooth
- Serve in Highball glasses

Substitutions:
- Strawberry infused rum is GREAT in this recipe (Approx 1.5 oz container freeze-dried strawberries in 750 ml Rum, steep for 1 to 2 months. See “Fruit Infused Booze” in my ‘friends only’ blog for more details.)
- In a pinch, Apple juice can be used instead of or with Strawberry drink

When I joined this tribe I said I would post drink recipes monthly, and I have them all over the place but geez where did June go? I haven't even started working on the Mai Tai yet . . . (and I am lazy today) and nothing is really better for 4th of July than Margaritas so I am reposting the party-sized Margarita recipe.

In case anyone is curious, I have a batch of Strawberry Vodka (one container of Trader Joe's freeze dried strawberries + 750ml Skyy - see "friends only" blog Fruit Infused Booze for complete instructions) infusing on my kitchen counter right now, it should be ready next week mmmmmmmmm with a little 7up.

***********************************************

Margarita

As promised, the favorite Party Margarita recipe. This recipe makes approximately 1 gallon, a Coleman jug works great.

The day before I need a gallon of Margaritas, I fill a small margarine tub about 3/4 and put that in the freezer, the ice chunk can be easily popped out when needed.

Now lets talk about Tequila . . . Please do not use Jose Cuevo gold in this recipe. Jose Cuevo has an intense smoky flavor and aroma that completely overwhelms the other flavors. I use Margaritaville Tequila Oro, but any medium quality (Trader Joe’s Zapopan Tequila Reposado is o.k.), mellow gold Tequila will do (if you are not a Tequila expert, look for a 750 ml bottle in the $12.00 to $20.00 range).

Ingredients:

1	750 ml bottle of Margaritaville Tequila Oro (approx 25.5 oz)
1	750 ml bottle Triple Sec (approx 25.5 oz)
1	12 oz can frozen Limeade concentrate*
16 oz	Fresh squeezed Lime juice **

- Dump all ingredients into a 1 gallon jug
- Add ½ the recommended water for the Limeade
- Drop in the chunk of ice
- Make sure the lid is tight and give the thing a good shake
- Serve over ice

* The frozen Limeade concentrate should be readily available, use either a store brand or MinuteMaid, I do not recommend the Bacardi frozen mixer in this recipe.

** After purchasing nearly every style of manual and electric juicer (I really have quite a collection), my local Wild Oats market now carries 16 oz bottles of organic not-from-concentrate lime juice (Santa Cruz organic), highly recommended.

I am sending a shout out to everyone to keep a look out on e-bay, or any Faire's. As Jade was wrapping up at Southern faire this year, her beloved sword( whom her roommates purchased for her as a birthday Present) slipped out of her gig bag ad someone has picked it up during her frantic search. It's a Short Schulps Sword with a middled eastern flare to it. Black and green are it's colors with brass accents on the hilt and handle. If anyone has seen said item please contact My self or Jade at her_jadeness@yahoo.com.
My own addition to this was:
As an FYI in addition to Sherri’s statement – Jade has worked for Jon for more years than many have been doing faire – this blade was designed by Jon Schulps for Jade. See if we can get a picture to post so everyone is looking for this piece. If anyone you know or a friend of a friend thought this was the best ground score of their lives it will be recognized and it will not go well for anyone keeping it. Better to return it to Jade or any other blade smith on faire circuit for the gratitude and brownie points it will earn you. Just something to keep in mind – this is not a ground score to keep. Recognizable and well known. There are people associated with Schulps that would not be kind in retrieving the blade. Lets get the word out there and make Jade unbelievable happy in the process.
Please distribute the following information to your guilds/staff and have them read it thoroughly, as it will make all of our lives much easier if we’re on the same page going into things. The general rules/guidelines will become the SOP for RenProd events going forward, though it’ll undoubtedly go through revisions as time goes on. The top portion of this document will include elements specific to Valhalla Itself – also in places in the document where they’re especially relevant, you’ll also see it so noted.

Vendors, you’ll find sections on booths and costuming near the end of the document.

Valhalla 2007 Notes & Information

· Theatrical Notes will be held each Friday evening at 9pm in the main hall of the Camp Richardson Lodge across the street from the site. Please have the guildmaster or at least one responsible representative who can at least take down notes of the discussions present at those meetings.

· Main Faire Notes will be held each Saturday and Sunday morning at 9am on the Queen’s Stage. Vendors are strongly encouraged to attend, and a representative of each guild, troupe, and stage act should also be in attendance.

· Village Notes (for those staying during the week) will be held at 10am on Monday morning at the Crossroads.

· Do not leave foodstuff unattended for any length of time. We had bears on site midday during setup last year, and two years ago they had a bear during the an event day, so just because it’s daylight, don’t assume that the food you leave one moment will be there the next.

· DO NOT tap into any of the on-site power drops unless clearing it first with the Operations department.

· NEVER disconnect any attached water lines/hoses for any reason. If you attach to a faucet, please detach once you are finished using it so it’s available for someone else.

· During check-in, tags for tents will also be available. Each tent should have a tag on its front similar to a parking pass, and should have the group/booth affiliation of the occupant(s) and their name.

· If you are not camping between weekends, we would request that you please drop your tent (you don’t have to remove the contents, just collapse the tent).

· There is no parking along Highway 89. Please unload your gear and move your vehicle to SnoPark. Maps will be available during check-in.

· If you are interested in being a camp host for your area of Actors Camp, please notify Security once you have set up your location.

Minor Guidelines

1. A minor is defined as under the age of 18.

2. During check-in each minor must have one legal guardian or a temporary guardian (with supporting documentation) present. Guardianship is not transferable during the weekend.

3. For the duration of the event the guardian is responsible for the actions and well being of their wards.

4. Any minor found holding or consuming alcohol or in any state of intoxication is subject to immediate expulsion along with their guardian.

5. From dusk until 7am, each minor must remain within the line of site of their guardian or within the same encampment as their guardian. If a minor is found without their guardian at any time they will be escorted back to their guardian by security and a warning will be issued. A second instance may result in the immediate expulsion of both the minor and the guardian.

Some example causes for Expulsion
Renaissance Productions management and security have final say in these matters. If expelled the booth must be closed immediately and removed after the Faire has closed. This list is neither absolute nor all-inclusive, and management will attempt to take the circumstances under consideration, but as examples:

1. Anyone who is obviously drunk or under the influence of drugs.

2. Anyone who is obviously handling or brandishing a weapon in a manner deemed dangerous by the Renaissance Productions management or security.

3. Anyone criticizing or deprecating patrons. This includes criticism of costuming. If you wish to engage a patron in conversation about his or her costume, make positive comments only and do not offer “helpful” suggestions unless directly requested to do so by the wearer.

4. Anyone selling, distributing or wearing illegal goods or drug related items or items that imply drug use. This is a zero tolerance policy.

5. According to the weapon laws, any vendor selling weapons to minors.

6. Anyone passing the hat without the appropriate approval.

7. Anyone stealing anything regardless of value.

8. Anyone caught entering or leaving a booth or campsite after hours without permission.

9. Anyone behaving improperly with a minor. Minors are not allowed in booth back areas, guild or entertainment encampments except accompanied by their guardian.

10. Anyone not complying with any booth or costuming criteria.

11. Anyone arguing with the management or security.

12. Anyone distributing passes or discounted tickets or wristbands to non-guild members.

One of the things we're planning is a bi-yearly small to medium renfaire on what (we hope) will be a 7-10 acre festival site, including merchant, demonstration, performance, and camping spaces, and we'd love your advice before we get in and actually start building stuff. What things would you like to see in a smallish regional faire site? What things haven't worked for you? If you're a merchant, what stuff do you wish the sites would have that they DoNT usualy have.

Workshops started last weekend and are ongoing. Looks like some really good ones this year.
Must have a current TB test. They are good for two years. Anyone that got one for the first year at the Dam will need to get another.
Lisa is still our ringleader and I am sure will have people checking and answering e-mails to rec_bev@hotmail(dot)com. Just hoping that keeps down some of the spam!
If you have concerns or questions get them to her so it can be covered at the meeting. Last I heard there was no phone or reliable office space etc for beverage so e-mail will probably be the easiest was to get a hold of them.
There will be online paperwork and I am sure they will get the website to all and sundry so go for it!
Make sure that anyone that is interested shows up and has the costume and the TB tests ready to go. Last year they were scanning right into the computer at the meeting.
Hope that helps

I am posting this in a couple of places so I am sorry to be redundant.

Teena Thornbrough was the victim of a hit and run on Wednesday night. I just spoke with her and while she is in a lot of pain she is in good spirits.

She apparently has a broken pelvis, lacerated liver, extreme road rash and a lot of swelling to her head. They did an MRI yesterday that was negative for swelling to her brain though, so that is good news.

She will be at the UC Davis medical center for a few more days, at the least, and then will hopefully be realeased home. I have her home address if anyone would like to send well wishes please feel free to contact me individually and I'll be happy to give it to you.

In any case, please keep her in your thoughts and send her lots of white light and positive energy.

Smooches,
Dawn

We went out to site today and they were working on stake out – we spoke to Lisa and contracts have been signed and the website is in the process of being updated. At that time there will be instructions for everything related to Beverage. They do not have phones out at site and it may be a questionable avenue for getting in touch with people. That has been true for beverage ever since I started working faire. Lisa mentioned they will have an e-mail posted for questions. Makes it easier to get the information out to everyone. Not sure how many places there will be available, but I imagine Lisa would appreciate getting everything from interested parties as early as possible. There are enough headaches ahead without wondering if people will want to return.
I know that in the past she said that unless she had personally told someone not to return that they are encouraged to come out and work or play. Didn’t ask for dates, but know that workshops start next week. Would be a good idea to get classes in as needed. TB tests will need to be updated if anyone has been more than two years from their tests. It does take a simple scratch test, but you have to go back and get the test read a few days later. After which a card or negative report needs to be kept on hand by the beverage office and by all caterers. Steve found this useful when he was temping and they needed someone that knew computers with a negative TB test for working at Kaiser – See – faire really can apply in real life!
Hope that helps and make sure that if you have questions you get them submitted so we can all be on the same page.

My plan was to regularly post drink recipes in my blog. And even though I did not set my blog for "friends" only it seems to be doing that (thanks Lara for letting me know).

Here's the deal, I'll post drink recipes as topics in this tribe every few weeks and anyone that wants to get extra goodies from my blog can be my friend.

I’m deeply sad to report that Galina Kaufman, mother of Konstantin, and co-founder of the Piroshki booth at the faire, passed away last week at the age of 90. She had recently lost her eyesight, making her life in the last year a real struggle, leading to what was probably a stroke. She leaves behind her son Walter, daughter Judy, and granddaughter Karina.
She was a classy lady, a real hostess, a very civilized human being, with a very interesting life. Galina was Russian, of course, but born and raised in China. Many don’t know she was a painter, and a good one. I will treasure her friendship, her strength of character, her wide-eyed world view...

ARIES (Mar 21- Apr 19)
Drinking style: Impulsive Aries people like to party and sometimes don't know when to call it a night. Their competitive streak makes them prone to closing-time shot contests. They're sloppy, fun drunks, and they get mighty flirty after a couple tipples. Getting Aries people drunk is a good way to get what you want out of them, should other methods fail. Aries can become bellicose when blotto, but they will assume that whatever happened should be forgiven (if not forgotten) by sunrise. They can be counted on to do the same for you - so long as you haven't gone and done anything really horrible to them last night, you sneaky Gemini.

TAURUS (Apr 20 - May 20)
Drinking style: Taurus prefers to drink at a leisurely pace, aiming for a mellow glow rather than a full-on zonk. Since a truly intoxicated Taurus is a one-person stampede, the kind of bull-in-a-china- shop inebriate who spills red wine on white carpets and tells fart jokes to employers, the preference for wining and dining (or Bud and buddies) to body shots and barfing is quite fortunate for the rest of us. This is not to say that the Bull is by any means a teetotaler -- god, no. A squiffy Taurus will get, er, gregarious (full of loudmouth soup, some would say) and is extremely amusing to drag to a karaoke bar when intoxicated.

GEMINI (May 21 - Jun 21)
Drinking style: Gemini's can drink without changing their behavior much-- they're so naturally chatty and short-attention- spanned that it's just hard to tell sometimes. They can amaze you by conversing with finesse and allusion, then doing something unbelievable in an extremely advanced state of intoxication, like puking in your shoe. Gemini's possess the magic ability to flirt successfully (and uninfuriatingly, which is very tricky) with several people at once. They like to order different cocktails every round -- repetition is boring -- and may create a theme (like yellow drinks: beer, sauvignon blanc and limoncello) for their own amusement.

CANCER (Jun 22 - Jul 22)
Drinking style: Cancer is a comfort drinker -- and an extra wine with dinner or an after-work beer or six can be extra comforting, can't it, Cancer darling? Like fellow water signs Scorpio and Pisces, Crabs must guard against lushery. Cancers are brilliant at ferreting out secret parties and insinuating themselves on VIP lists -- and, in true Hollywood style, Cancers are never really drunk; instead, they get "tired and emotional" (read: weepy when lubricated). But there's nothing better than swapping stories (and spit) over a few bottles of inky red wine with your favorite Cancer. Even your second-favorite Cancer will do. The sign also rules the flavor vanilla, and you'd be adored if you served up a vanilla vodka and soda.

LEO (Jul 23 - Aug 22)
Drinking style: Leo likes to drink and dance -- they're often fabulous dancers, and usually pretty good drinkers as well, losing their commanding dignity and turning kittenish. Of course, they're quite aware they're darling - Leos will be Leos, after all. They generally know their limit, probably because they loathe losing self-control. When they get over- refreshed, expect flirting to ensue -- and perhaps not with the one who brought them. But Leo's not the type to break rules even when drunk, so just try to ignore it (try harder, Cancer) and expect a sheepish (and hung over) Lion to make it up to you the next day.

VIRGO (Aug 23 - Sept 22)
Drinking style: Cerebral Virgos are compelled to impose order onto their bender. Their famously fussy quest for purity could lead to drinking less than other signs, sure -- but it could also lead to drinking booze neat, to sucking down organic wine or just to brand loyalty. They rarely get fully shellacked -- but, oh, when they do! Virgos are controlled by the intellect, but there's an unbridled beast lurking within, and they let it loose when walloped. It's dead sexy (and surprisingly unsloppy). As one Virgo friend used to declare, "I'm going to drink myself into a low level of intelligence tonight." A toast to the subgenius IQ!

LIBRA (Sept 23 - Oct 23)
Drinking style: "I'm just a social drinker," slurs Libra, "it's just that I'm so damn social." Libra loves nothing more than to party, mingle and relate to everyone. Whether dipped in favor of Good Libra (with Insta-Friend device set to "on") or heavier on the Evil Libra side (they are little instigators when bored), the Scales can really work a room. Charming as they are, Libras are notoriously lacking in self-control, however, which can get them into all sorts of trouble -- including wearing their wobbly boots waaaay too early in the evening, flirting with their best friend's beau or even blacking out the night's events entirely. Oops!

SCORPIO (Oct 24 - Nov 21)
Drinking style: Don't ever tell Scorpios they've had enough, for they'll smirk at you and quietly but intentionally keep tippling till they're hog- whimpering drunk, out of 100-proof spite. Scorpios like to drink, and screw you if you have a problem with that. Most of them see the sauce as something to savor in itself, and not as a personality- altering tool - though if depressed, self-loathing Scorps seek total obliteration. But generally, they're fascinating drinking pals, brilliant conversationalists and dizzying flirts. They also remember everything -- especially what you did when you were blitzed. Only drink with a Scorpio who likes you.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 - Dec 21)
Drinking style: In vino veritas -- and, for Sagittarius, in booze blurtiness: When buttered, they'll spill all your secrets and many of their own. Tactlessness aside, Sagittarius is just plain fun to drink with. This is a sign of serious partying (what else would you expect from the sign of Sinatra, Keith Richards, the Bush twins and Anna Nicole Smith?). They're the people who chat up everyone in the room, then persuade the entire crowd to travel somewhere else -- like a nightclub, or a playground, or Cancun. Good-natured hi-jinks are sure to ensue (including a high possibility of loopy groping; spontaneous Sag is a brilliant booty call).

CAPRICORN (Dec 22 - Jan 19)
Drinking style: Capricorn is usually described as practical, steadfast, money-hungry and status-thirsty -- no wonder they get left off the astrological cocktail-party list. But this is the sign of David Bowie and Annie Lennox, not to mention Elvis. Capricorn is the true rock star: independent, powerful and seriously charismatic, not too eager to please. And if they make money being themselves, who are you to quibble? But just like most rock stars, they're either totally on or totally off, and they generally need a little social lubricant to loosen up and enjoy the after party, especially if they can hook up with a cute groupie.

AQUARIUS (Jan 20 - Feb 18)
Drinking style: Aquarius and drinking don't go together that well (except for water, that is). They have an innate tendency toward know-it-allism, and if they get an idea while sizzled, they're more stubborn than a stain or a stone. If they're throwing a party or organizing an outing, however, they're too preoccupied with their duties to get combative and they make perfectly charming drunks in that case. Fortunately, they're usually capital drink-nursers. They also make the best designated drivers (if you can get them before they start raising their wrist) Aquarius is fascinated by drunk people and capable of holding interesting conversations with soused strangers while sober.

PISCES (Feb 19 - Mar 20)
Drinking style: If you're a Pisces, you've probably already heard that you share a sign and an addictive personality -- with Liz Taylor, Liza Minelli and Kurt Cobain. Not only do Pisces like to lose themselves in the dreamy, out-there feeling that only hooch can give, but they build up a mighty tolerance fast. Who needs an expensive date like that? On the other hand, they're fabulously enchanting partners, whether in the conversation or in crime. With the right Pisces, you can start out sharing a pitcher of margaritas and wind up in bed together for days. The phrase "addictive personality" can be read two ways you know.
